      While driving is an ideal travel form for many, the costs of booking can be a serious money drainer. Here are our best tips to ensure you have maximum savings and minimal losses when booking your next car rental.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

      1. Do a broad car rental search\u00a0first<\/h3>\n
      \n\t

      For starters, no one actually brings a completely empty tank of gas<\/strong>. Who\u00a0drives their rental back with the \u201cFILL TANK NOW\u201d alarm blaring? No one, that\u2019s who. More likely than not, you\u2019ll have at least<\/em> a quarter tank that you paid for, in addition to the\u00a0full \u201cdiscounted\u201d tank you agreed to buy.<\/p>\n

      Finally, take note that\u00a0the rental company\u2019s cheaper fuel rate is usually only pennies less than the gas\u00a0stations. In a nutshell:\u00a0do not pay ahead for fuel!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

      3. Rental Car Insurance to Buy or Do Not Buy<\/h3>\n
      \n\t

      Car rental companies make a mint on insurance<\/strong>, which often overlaps in what they cover. Rental companies will always try to pressure you to also buy theirs. Unless you have<\/em> to, don\u2019t<\/strong>!<\/p>\n

      There are 4 ways that you can\u00a0be covered by\u00a0car insurance<\/strong> without<\/em> buying it from a rental company:<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Your credit card\u00a0<\/strong>\u2013 check\u00a0if it does, if so make sure you book with that card to validate it, and understand\u00a0the policy beforehand<\/li>\n
      2. Regular (at-home) car insurance<\/strong> sometimes covers rentals too,\u00a0call to check<\/li>\n
      3. Travel insurance<\/strong> sometimes covers rentals, call & check<\/li>\n
      4. Independent car rental insurance<\/strong> (see below)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Independent rental insurance companies offer annual insurance policies much<\/em> cheaper\u00a0than rental agencies. With annual policies from ~$42+, this can easily be more cost-wise especially if you are making multiple bookings over\u00a0a year.\u00a0ICarHireInsurance<\/a> and Insurance4CarHire<\/a> are two recommended options recommended by The Guardian.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

        4. Decline rental car add-ons like GPS<\/h3>\n
        \n\t

        Unless you enjoy overpaying for a GPS device that you won\u2019t get to keep, be\u00a0thrifty and use\u00a0a maps app in your phone such as Google Maps, buy a GPS device\u00a0ahead of time (which is much<\/em> cheaper to do these days), or install\u00a0an equivalent navigation\u00a0app on your smartphone. All these options are\u00a0cheaper than paying $15+ per day for a device that\u2019s not even yours!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

        5. Upgrade or not to Upgrade<\/h3>\n
        \n\t

        Now, if booking the cheapest car rental possible is not your objective, upgrade away! If savings is what you\u2019re after though, book economy or compact cars and avoid upgrades (whether free or offered), as this usually means you\u2019re getting a less fuel-efficient<\/strong> car.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

        6. Read the rental car contract fine print<\/h3>\n
        \n\t

        Look for hidden fees, taxes, or \u201cDoes not include\u2026<\/em>\u201d phrases to make sure that the price on your booking is the true final cost. We\u2019ve e-mailed or phoned companies directly to confirm the price of the\u00a0online receipt. Better safe than sorry!<\/p>\n

        Other fine prints to watch for:<\/p>\n

        1. Are there mileage restrictions<\/strong> on the booking? We\u2019ve been burned by exceeding mileage limits and were charged a dollar amount per excess kilometers. Ouch!<\/li>\n
        2. Are there hidden taxes or fees<\/strong>, or is it clearly stated \u201call taxes and fees included\u201d on your booking receipt?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

          7. Do a thorough inspection at rental car pick-up<\/h3>\n
          \n\t

          No one wants their own horror story of false charges made against them by a rental agency. To avoid this, take the following steps on pick-up:<\/p>\n

          1. On the inspection sheet, write down every last scratch and nick you can find<\/strong> both on the interior and exterior of the car. Check that wheels are inflated, windshields are chip-free and check the bumpers, sides, and seats for damage. Get the inspection sheet\u00a0signed before leaving.<\/li>\n
          2. Double check that the fuel tank is full<\/strong> (one time we were given a car with 1\/3 a tank on pick-up \u2013 good thing we checked)!<\/li>\n
          3. Ensure\u00a0the mileage written down matches up with what the dashboard says<\/strong>. This is especially important if you have mileage restrictions on your booking!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>

            8. Double check your credit card statement<\/h3>\n
            \n\t

            After your booking, be sure to check your credit card statement to ensure you weren\u2019t charged extra fees that you didn\u2019t ask for.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>
